Hospital Bill Regarding Mental Health?

Approximately two months ago I was hospitalized for suicidal ideation. When approached by the police officer he informed me that I wouldn't have to pay a dime regarding my medical help. I didn't really want to go but was taken anyway. During my diagnosis my fiance spoke to a nurse who also assured him it wouldn't cost us anything. Now they're sending me a large hospital bill. What should I do?
