96 V6 Mustang with cobra engine?

The other day I was at a family get together, and my uncle was showing me his mustang. Its a 96 with the body style of a V6. Then he opens the hood up and there is a 4.6 Dohc engine inside. Why is this. He said he bought it this way and hasn't made any alterations.
